Like a lot of fight in your fish? Well, the might Tarpon is just the fish for you. We are talking about a monster fish that can come in at over 200 pounds and give you a workout you will not soon forget.
I do not like big fish. I like huge fish. The Tarpon fills the bill. Imagine hooking Junior Seau and trying to real him in. The largest Tarpon have come in an almost 300 pounds and 8 feet in length. Oh, they also happen to love to fight.
If I asked you what fish family a 200 plus pound fish with a length of up to eight feet would be in, you would probably come up with some good guesses. None of them would be the herring, but it is true. Yes, the might Tarpon is a herring.
Deoxygenated areas of the ocean are becoming a big problem because fish cannot live in them. Well, the Tarpon does not mind them. It simply surfaces and breathes directly from the air instead of through the water. A buff fish, indeed.
You can take a Tarpon with both flies and spin casting. Heavy duty tackle is the name of the game, but it really doesn't matter. You are only in it for the fun of the chase and most Tarpon will spit the bit sooner or later.
The Tarpon is not a picky eater. Bait fish, crab and squid are common bait, but ask the locals in your area what is exciting the Tarpon. In fact, this is a rule you should follow for just about any area.
The real beauty of the Tarpon is it likes to stay close the shoreline. This makes it a great game fish because not only does it have a lot of fight in it, but it has limited room to dive. As a result, it tends to run like a puma and jump out of the water like a kangaroo.
Even better, the habitat of the Tarpon means everyone from experts to beginners can have a go at them. You just have to walk down to the water and start having at it. Some even fish from kayaks now.
